Oral Hygiene/Brace Care Tools

Dr. Vecere has always recommended a variety of oral hygiene “tools” to keep your teeth clean and gums healthy during orthodontic treatment. Below we have a short list of oral hygiene devices to consider. You should decide which products work best for you.

  • Water Pik: helps to flush out food and stimulate gums.
    • “WP100 W/C by Waterpik works best with orthodontic appliances.
  • Toothbrush: child’s size soft
  • Proxabrush/Interdental brush: gets between braces & massages gums.
  • Mechanical flosser: much easier to use than regular floss.
    • (eg. “Water Pic”,“Oral B”) Other floss aids: Floss threader, Super Floss
  • Plaque disclosing rinses: eg. “Inspector Hector”, “Agent Cool Blue”.
  • Mechanical toothbrushes – “Oral B Triumph”

Additional Points:

  • Mechanical toothbrushes are highly recommended especially the “Oral B Triumph” which has a specially designed brush for going in between adjacent brackets.
  • Remember, you cannot do a good job brushing your front teeth if you are doing it blindly. You must look at what you are doing. The only way to see what you are doing is to SPIT OUT MOST OF THE EXCESS TOOTHPASTE. Then you should open your mouth and look in while you are brushing. This way you can brush between the braces and the gums effectively.
